A set of four cool new window opening and closing animations got added to gaudy GNOME Shell extension Burn My Windows this weekend.
A veritable Linux eye-candy essential, Burn My Windows makes it easy to apply a variety of visual effects to Ubuntu when opening and/or closing app windows, dialogs, and modals. Its sole purpose is to make using Linux a bit more entertaining.
Burn My Windows v45 is the latest update. It adds support for the upcoming GNOME 48 release (which will ship in Ubuntu 25.04 this April), fine-tunes effect filtering in Preferences, and improves its Incinerate effect with more natural-looking fire propagation.
However, it’s probably the 4 new effects you’re most keen to hear about:
- Aura Glow– windows appear/disappear with glowing aura
- Mushroom – a playful effect inspired by the Super Mario video games
- RGB Warp– warps app window colours by separating colour channels
- Team Rocket– mimics a specific animation from the Pokémon TV series
Want to see these effects in action?
I put together a short—and I mean short—compilation of them:

Now offering 25+ effects to pick from, from the iconic window flames effect of the Compiz era through to newer effects like the ones added in this update, plus customisation and settings galore, Burn My Windows packs a lot in to its gimmicky punch.
Some of the animations included also also available for KDE Plasma through the KDE Store.
Head over to the GNOME Extensions website or use the desktop Extension Manager app to install the extension. If you already have it installed? You’ll get the update automatically but it won’t apply until you log out and back in.
The latest version supports GNOME 45+ (i.e., Ubuntu 24.04 LTS and up) but those of you on an older release needn’t miss out on the fun as older versions of this extension (albeit with a few effects/features missing) is also available to install.
