Canonical has announced that it now ‘officially supports’ Ubuntu on the NVIDIA Jetson Orin series of computing modules, designed for low-power AI and machine learning applications.
The General Availability (GA) of Ubuntu 22.04 LTS for the NVIDIA Jetson Orin brings “optimized performance, out-of-the-box compatibility, and an easy pathway to high-performance AI solutions for AI developers everywhere“, say Canonical.
Offering Ubuntu certified images for cutting-edge hardware is something Canonical has been ramping up, and doing so for NVIDIA Jetson modules should provide a lure to developers wanting to leverage them for edge AI, robotics and other uses.
Our collaboration with NVIDIA represents a significant step forward in democratizing AI at the edge. By combining Ubuntu’s enterprise-grade reliability with NVIDIA’s cutting-edge accelerated computing, we’re enabling innovators to take AI from concept to production effortlessly.
Joe Dulin, VP of Devices Sales at Canonical
Developers get to use Ubuntu knowing that the platform is tailored and test for the hardware, is backed by enterprise-grade security updates and ongoing support, and has undergone thorough QA by Canonical’s engineers to ensure stability and reliability.
Less hassle on the platform side means more time for innovation, ideation and iteration — plus experimentation since Canonical also say Ubuntu Core 24 images are available for the NVIDIA Jetson Orin series too.
Ubuntu Core is a minimal, secure, and strictly confined version of Ubuntu that is designed for deploying production images to IoT and edge computing devices. Ubuntu Core is immutable and containerises the entire system, supports OTA updates and easy rollbacks.
Prebuilt Ubuntu Core 24 images for the NVIDIA Jetson don’t appear to be available to download right now, so Canonical provides documentation on how to create a custom image manually for those wanting to get started right away.
For a more traditional OS environment, developers can download Ubuntu for NVIDIA Jetson from the distro’s official website, where the newly certified Ubuntu Server 22.04 images are provided for the following modules:
- Jetson AGX Orin series
- Jetson Orin Nano series
- Jetson Orin NX series
See Canonical’s announcement post for more details on this development.
