The Ubuntu 24.04.2 LTS release is now available to download, albeit one week later than initially planned.
Serving as the second point release in the current Ubuntu 24.04 LTS series, Ubuntu 24.04.2 compacts the slew of security, bug, and software updates pushed out to the Noble Numbat since the last point release ISO was spun in August 2024.
Ubuntu 24.04.2 LTS also brings an updated hardware enablement stack (HWE). This is composed of a newer Linux kernel and updated graphics drivers—Linux 6.11 and Mesa 24.2.8 respectively—back-ported from Ubuntu 24.10.
Why do point releases exist?

Ubuntu LTS versions are supported for a minimum of 5 years. Periodical point releases are created during the first 3 of those to refresh the installer image (ISO). Doing this cuts down on the amount of updates new users will need to download after (or during) installation.
Plus, as point releases rebase the system on top of a newer Linux kernel and graphics driver stack, it means the ISO is able to boot on and better supported newer hardware—hardware that may not have been around when the first release was made in April 2024.
Ubuntu 24.04.2 LTS provides:
- Linux kernel 6.11
- Mesa 24.2.8
- libdrm 2.4.122
- GNOME Shell 46.0
- LibreOffice 24.2.7
- Mozilla Firefox 1351
Plus a lot more — view a full(er) list of changes made between Ubuntu 24.04.1 and Ubuntu 24.04.2 on the Ubuntu Discourse (that page may not be updated at the time of publishing this post, but will be at some point.)
As a reminder, Ubuntu 24.04 LTS is supported until April 2029 at the earliest, with the option of support beyond that date provided through Ubuntu ESM and/or Ubuntu Pro.
You can download Ubuntu 24.04.2 LTS for desktop, Raspberry Pi, server, and other devices direct from the Ubuntu website releases page (the main Ubuntu website download page hasn’t been updated to point to the new ISO yet).
More to come!
Ubuntu 24.04.2 LTS is the first of two point releases planned for this year.
Ubuntu 24.04.3 is due for release in the summer. Aside from rolling up all of the software, bug fix, and security updates issued between now and then, will be powered by Linux kernel 6.14 back ported from the upcoming Ubuntu 25.04 release.
Don’t already run Ubuntu 24.04 LTS and want to? Ubuntu 24.04.2 LTS is now the recommended installer image to download, boot, and install from.
