NetworkManager 1.52 Released with IPvlan Interface Support, ethtool FEC Mode

NetworkManager 1.52 was released today as the latest stable version of this popular open-source software for managing network connections inside a Linux-based operating system.

Coming five months after NetworkManager 1.50, the NetworkManager 1.52 release introduces IPvlan interface support, the ability to manually configure the authentication of LTE’s initial EPS Bearer, support for ethtool FEC (Forward Error Correction) mode, and support for automatically adding routes to DNS servers via the ipv4.routed-dns and ipv6.routed-dns properties.

NetworkManager 1.52 also introduces a new ipv4.link-local=fallback property to set an IPv4 link-local address when no other IPv4 is set, as well as new ipv4.shared-dhcp-range and ipv4.shared-dhcp-lease-time properties to allow the customization of the DHCP range and lease time offered by the DHCP server when in shared connection method.

On top of that, this release enables the ability to specify DNS servers with a URI-like syntax that supports DNS over TLS (DoT) name servers and adds support for the “IPv6-only preferred” DHCPv4 option (RFC 8925) for indicating that a host supports an IPv6-only mode and is willing to forgo obtaining an IPv4 address if the network provides IPv6 connectivity.

Among other noteworthy changes, NetworkManager 1.52 adds support for using the Dnsconfd plugin for the configuration of the system-wide DNS caching resolver, adds support for storing interactive history in $XDG_CACHE_HOME/nmcli-history instead of ~/.nmcli-history, and adds a “shared” method to the IPv6 configuration options in the nmtui text-based interface.

It also adds support for the initrd-generator to understand the “rd.net.dns” option for configuring global name servers, adds two additional keys “resolve-mode” and “certification-authority” to the global-dns configuration section, adds support for OCI in nm-cloud-setup, removes support for the “dhcpcanon” DHCP client, and removes support for building with Autotools.

Several bugs were addressed in this release, including a bug that prevented the activation of bond and bridge’s ports, a bug that prevented the activation of OVS interfaces, an issue with the creation of MTPCP endpoints for IPv4 with DAD and IPv6 tentative addresses, and a bug preventing some VPN routes from being added to the table specified in the ipv4/6.routing-table, which allows the use of policy routing to mitigate TunnelVision attacks.

NetworkManager 1.52 is available for download right now from its GitLab page if you fancy compiling it from sources, but I recommend that you wait for it to arrive in the stable software repositories of your GNU/Linux distribution before updating your installations.
