New insight from my friend Chris Ramseyer (TweakTown, earlier Tom’s Hardware):
There are enterprise grade USB drives. I have a deep dive article coming out soon over the Hyperstone U9 controller. It’s one I would use for FreeNAS. I would NOT use a consumer grade DRAMless thumb drive for a serious installation! I’ve killed many over the years in round up articles. The P/E is too low on many of them. MIcron makes a Hyperstone U9 drive for cell towers. The Micron version shipping now goes on the internal USB header. I will ask about other models tonight when I talk to Hyperstone. They deliver really good performance 3000 read / 1000 write IOPS, but the endurance is the best part. Hyperstone put a lot of work into the ECC engine.
